First Step! This book provides a visually friendly and easy-to-follow first step toward a mindset of healthy eating. It seems to presume that the readers will not be situated or intending to choose a truly healthy diet and lifestyle, but offers them better choices than they otherwise may make. It lists eight healthy foods to include every day that would greatly benefit anyone's daily diet! The book also suggests what to eat and what not to eat at restaurants and fast food eateries, at holiday parties, and other special situations. If you know someone who is not seriously interested in optimal nutrition but may be open to making better food choices, this book would be excellent at helping him or her to begin thinking about nutrition. It's a good segue into being conscious and conscientious about healthy eating. Author of THE 3:00 PM SECRET: Live Slim and Strong, Live Your Dreams
Terrific! This is a great book. Slick and attractive, with fantastic full-color pictures. Very well researched too, which is expected coming from the folks behind one of the most densely packed informative magazines, Men's Health.
Each two page section has a high-calorie, fat trap food on the right, and a healthier alternative on the left. Lots of reasons for why one is a better choice than the other, as well as quick lists of other good choices (and not so good choices) on the left and right.
This simple, but effective layout conveys a ton of information quickly and easily. The sections are by restaurant, and by situation type (like shopping at the mall, or at a holiday party), so it is easy to read and get good ideas for how to make better food choices.
The only negative is that you might never get fries again, after you see all the things you could eat instead and still not hit the calorie count of the fries. Wow!
Highly recommended book, even if you aren't trying to lose weight. You'll learn a ton about the foods you are eating at restaurants, which is well worth the price of admission.
Better Choices! Take home message: Make better choices when you're in bad situations! The book has 8 healthy recommended foods to eat each day - best to stick with these. The book has an easy to follow layout with pictures. This is a good book to introduce someone to the idea that nutrition is important. If you want a surefire way to a healthy, trim, body and a reboot of your life try, THE 3:00 PM SECRET: Live Slim and Strong, Live Your Dreams!
Skip the crab cakes -- drink the champagne! A great buy! Jam-packed with accessible information, beautifully packaged. Nice color photos. User-friendly layout. Small enough that I can throw it in a purse or carry-on. Doesn't waffle around, so to speak, but compares brand names, various grocery and restaurant menu items, etc. Example: think Oscar Mayer turkey bacon is more healthful than "regular" bacon? A 2-slice serving of each totals 70 calories with 6 grams of fat. However, the turkey bacon has 380 mg of sodium, while the America's Favorite Bacon tallies 290 mg of sodium.
