(Finally) A Short-Winded Review 2 things make this one of the quintessential business books of our time.
1 - The book's conclusions are based on widespread, tested, and statistically proven observations, not personal theories.
Unlike most authors who write based upon their own experiences or those of a very limited number of other individuals, Collins' team spent years undertaking a massive and very well designed study examining thousands of companies. Their insights are fundamental, timeless truths of business which apply equally to your business and mine.
2 - It is written very clearly and makes for an easy read.
Many authors have good content, but few are able to express themselves in a simple, concise and easy to understand manner. Jim and his team hit the nail on the head despite the complexity of the issue covered.
If you a business leader or would like to be one, this book is a must-read!

Very informative Good book with lots of good info, but a little hard to follow. This book has to be read from cover to cover to understand even small portions of it.
Transcending the curse of competence Underneath all the hype, statistics and jargon, lies one simple an amazing fact. You can have great managers with great ideas, but the companies that stand tall are those that had CEO's who were not afraid to get into execution. They were not afraid to get their hands dirty. They were not afraid to get into the realm of systems, processes and implementation. So if you want the summarized version, it goes pretty much like this: "Great companies are those in which the leaders are able to transcend the curse of competence, think differently about the role of technology, and create a culture of discipline." Now get the book. A must read for anyone who aspires to be a leader or for any leader who wishes to do better.
Make time for this one There are dozens of long, favorable reviews heaping praise on Jim Collins and team. Suffice it to say, this book offers useful insights and tangible concepts.
Equally important for the small business person, this offers a unique insight into the composition and attributes of successful companies. Collins & Co do an excellent job organizing huge volumes of research, and making the information very plain.
